Press release: Launch: www.erinnerungsort-fuerstenfeldbruck1972.de will be online on 09/05/22

On 5 September 2022, the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Olympic Attack, the digital place of remembrance of the Fürstenfeldbruck District will go online.
It consists of a website (www.erinnerungsort-fuerstenfeldbruck1972.de) and the app "Erinnerungsort 72" (available for download from Google Play Store and App Store).

Both the website and the app provide information about the hostage-taking and murders of 5 and 6 September in Munich and Fürstenfeldbruck, make the memories of contemporary witnesses come alive and create opportunities to commemorate the eleven murdered Israeli athletes and the Bavarian policeman in digital space.

On the homepage of the digital place of remembrance, the Fürstenfeldbruck District Office will publish a easily accessible, source-based information of the events, initially in German and English. Historical documents such as the communiqués of the hostage-takers and the lists of prisoners whom the "Black September" wanted to free will be published on the website. In addition, video interviews with, among others, the former mayor of Munich, Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel, and the mayor of the Olympic Village, Dr. Walther Tröger, provide an insight into the decision-making process of those responsible. In further eyewitness reports, paramedics, police officers and BGS officials involved on site describe their memories of the evening of 5 September 1972.
The Fürstenfeldbruck airbase cannot be used as an authentic place of remembrance because it is located in the territory of the Bundeswehr. The app "Erinnerungsort 72" will make the site accessible in digital space and enable visitors to look around "on site" and experience the history of the Olympic Attack in a virtual tour. When the site is opened, the app will also be available for use on site. It uses "augmented reality" technology to link the current location with the events of September 1972.

As an actor in remembrance work, the Fürstenfeldbruck District Office is creating an open remembrance and commemoration service that is accessible worldwide 365 days a year, even beyond the 50th anniversary.
