On September 5, 2022, the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Olympic assassination, the digital place of remembrance of the Fürstenfeldbruck district office will go online.

This consists of a website(www.erinnerungsort-fuerstenfeldbruck1972.de) and the app "Place of Remembrance 72" (made available for download as of 05.09.22 in the Google Play Store and App Store).

Both the website and the app provide information about the hostage-taking and murders of September 5 and 6 in Munich and Fürstenfeldbruck, bring the memories of contemporary witnesses to life, and create opportunities to commemorate the eleven murdered Israeli athletes and the Bavarian police officer in the digital space.

On the homepage of the digital place of remembrance, the Fürstenfeldbruck District Office will publish an easily accessible, source-based account of the events, initially in German and English. The website will publish historical documents such as the hostage-takers' communiqués and the lists of prisoners whom "Black September" wanted to free. In addition, video interviews with, among others, the former mayor of Munich, Dr. Hans-Jochen Vogel, and the mayor of the Olympic Village, Dr. Walther Tröger, provide insight into the decision-making process of those responsible. In further eyewitness accounts, paramedics, police officers and BGS officials involved on site describe their memories of the evening of September 5, 1972.

To date, the Fürstenfeldbruck airbase cannot be used as an authentic place of remembrance because it is located on Bundeswehr territory. The app "Erinnerungsort 72" will make the site accessible in digital space and enable visitors to look around "on site" and learn about the history of the Olympic assassination in a virtual tour. When the site is opened, the app will also be usable on site. It uses "augmented reality" technology to connect the current site with the events of September 1972.

The Fürstenfeldbruck District Office, as an actor in remembrance work, is creating an open remembrance and commemoration offer that is accessible worldwide 365 days a year, even beyond the 50th anniversary.
