Remembrance and resolution from 2022

Watch the Clip

2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the Olympic attack. For more than 20 years, the district of Fürstenfeldbruck has kept the memories alive. The first commemorative event took place in 1997, and in 1999 a memorial was installed at the gates of the air base, giving remembrance a place within the district. Every year on 5 September, a commemoration of the victims, their relatives and the survivors takes place in Fürstenfeldbruck. In 2012, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary, the district hosted a commemoration event in the presence of the Israeli relatives.

In 2022, a large commemoration ceremony was held in Munich and Fürstenfeldbruck - hosted by the Federal Minister of the Interior and for Home Affairs, the Bavarian Minister President and the District Administrator of Fürstenfeldbruck. Speakers at the ceremony included Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Israeli President Yitzchak Herzog, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser and Ankie Spitzer on behalf of the relatives of the victims' families and survivors.

"I ask you as the head of state of this country and in the name of the Federal Republic of Germany for forgiveness [...] for the fact that what happened could happen" - the Federal President found clear words in his speech to heal the open wounds that have lasted for more than 50 years.

The digital place of remembrance was presented and opened by District Administrator Thomas Karmasin at the memorial ceremony.

All speeches can be viewed online in the BR-Media Library (in German language only).
