Preserving the Memory

Photo of visitors

The Fürstenfeldbruck district government has been doing remembrance work for the 1972 Olympic attack, which ended so tragically here, for more than 20 years now. The first memorial event was held in 1997, and in 1999 a memorial was installed at the gates of the airbase. Every September 5th there is a commemorative event in the district for the victims and their families, and for the survivors from the Israeli Olympic team. The 40th anniversary in 2012 was remembered in a large ceremony. This was the first time in 40 years that relatives of the victims and survivors of the attack returned to the site of the fateful events.

The place where the final standoff took place, where nine of the Israelis and one German policeman were killed, will be managed by the German armed forces until presumably 2026, so it cannot be used as a memorial site until then. But the Fürstenfeldbruck district government feels very strongly about ensuring the fallen are not forgotten, so it has decided to create a digital remembrance site that will remain even after the actual one is obtained.
